Sandwich is the oldest town on Cape Cod, and its housing stock shows it — colonial and saltbox homes in the historic village center, many under Sandwich Historic District review, alongside newer homes further out in East Sandwich and Forestdale. Two different challenges live in this one town. In the historic village center, the challenge is regulatory as much as physical — roofing, siding, and window replacements often need approval that respects the home's original look, which means working with materials and profiles that satisfy the historic commission without forcing a full custom-millwork budget. Out in East Sandwich and Forestdale, homes are newer and largely outside that review process, so the challenge is more about exposure: Sandwich faces Cape Cod Bay directly, with no barrier islands or peninsula to soften nor'easters the way the Sound-facing towns get some protection. North-facing homes in East Sandwich, along the bay, take weather straight on. South Sandwich, further from the water, sees less direct exposure but still falls under the same town permitting either way.

For homes in the historic village center, we work within approved roofing profiles and colors while still upgrading what's underneath — modern ice-and-water shield and proper ventilation that the original construction never had. For bay-side homes in East Sandwich and newer homes in Forestdale and South Sandwich, the priority is wind and moisture performance against direct, unbuffered nor'easter exposure off Cape Cod Bay.

Sandwich's historic homes, concentrated in the village center, were built with narrow-reveal clapboard, and replacing it with something that doesn't match can be both a town compliance issue and an aesthetic one. In East Sandwich, Forestdale, and South Sandwich, that constraint mostly disappears, and the priority shifts to moisture and wind performance. Either way, we install siding that keeps the historic profile where it's required — clapboard-style, appropriate trim details — while giving you a material that holds paint and resists moisture better than what's on the house now.

A lot of Sandwich's older homes still have original single-pane or early replacement windows that leak air and look it. In the historic district, we work within true-divided-lite requirements while upgrading the glass and seals behind them.
